![]() ![]() This album is similiar to the great 'Steal Your Face', (again, don't listen to the critics, there's nothing wrong with that album), however, the band aren't as 'tight' and there's more jamming, (nothing like the earlier stuff though, justy general extended solo's etc). Great sound, (occasionally the odd vocal is quite against the instruments yet this is neither here nor there), fab playing, especially Jerry's guitar, as well as great vocals. This is by far their most 'upbeat' and 'uptempo' album. It's the electric brother to the aforementioned album. It captured the post Godcheaux Dead on fine form. For those of you who don't know, this album was released in 1981, just after 'Reckoning'. I personally think giving this album less than 4 stars is insane, especially given the general acclaim aimed at 'With a Net' this is far superior. ![]() I bought with trepidation this and 'Reckoning' as I gear towards 70's albums and not 1980's and some of the reviews surrounding this particular album weren't too great, (as always though, don't listen to people and critics - it's down to everyones taste. I now have every 'official' live release from the band as well as a few of the archive releases. They are, quite simply, the best live act i've ever heard. The matrix not only captures the audience and gives us some feel for the atmosphere of the Providence Civic Center, but it also replaces the board’s rough Stranger with an audience patch, giving us a much more copacetic recording of this ripping version. As someone who just 12 months ago knew nothing about this band, (I knew they were a band yet for some reason I always thought they were mordernish, like the Stone Roses in style!!!), I know adored these guys. Then don’t miss Bobby cheesing out in the Good Lovin’ closer before the US Blues encore caps it all.Ĭharlie Miller reworked the soundboard to this one, giving a crispy base for Hunter Seamons’s matrix that we have cued up here. The Other One eventually heads into a well-conceived Wharf Rat> GDTRFB. This percussive performance is like a tocsin call from the ancient past, as Mickey and Billy create some alternative, but vaguely familiar world. From the Drums, a ridiculous Space flows forth, distressingly alien and then suddenly luscious and comforting as it bubbles forth, gathering into a steamy Other One. After that, we get a frenetic Eyes that sets up a segues from Jerry’s blistering raw energy on the guitar to the immense power of the drummers as they break out the earthquake drum after the rest of the boys leave the stage. And that tasty nugget leads the way to a ferocious Estimated that is replete with earthy jams. ![]() But things really kick off a tune later with a fiesty Supplication jam that is as fine as it is rare. The second set, previously released as one of the Download Series, is a luscious tour-de-force, beginning with a powerful Samson. And while the rest of the set is delightful, the highlights of the first half have to be the Peggy-O and Althea, with Jerry just killing it on both. The band kicks things off with a super hot Stranger, and this despite the fact that they had just played the tune the night before. ![]()
